Harsh, Trebly sound - what's causing it?

Hi, I am a complete noob and put together this car stereo system and ended up with a system that sounds terrible. It is harsh and has too much treble. Adjusting the EQ can help, but even then you can't turn it up too much without it becoming painful. The sony receiver has a weird DM button which is supposed to help make digital media sound better, but that makes it even more harsh and trebly. I don't need incredible sound, but I would like to be able to turn it up and enjoy it. I generally listen to rock, oldies, alt-country, or hip hop if that matters. Below are the components and my prevailing theories. Any feedback would be appreciated.

My car stereo setup (in 95 honda civic hatchback)

Sony CDXGT540UI MP3/WMA/AAC Player CD Receiver
4x52watts max - 17x4 RMS

front doors: Polk Audio DB651 6.5-Inch Coaxial Speakers ($55), 180 watts max, 60 watts continuous, 4ohm, sensitivity:92 (low),

rear boxes: Pioneer TS-A6963R 6-Inch X 9-Inch, 270-Watt 3-Way Speakers ($47), 270 watts max, 4ohm, sensitivity:91, 40 watts nominal

Theories:
Mounting might cause Polks to not be able to show their bass. Maybe I need sound proofing insulation.

These speakers need more power - maybe I need a 4x50 amp like the Alpine MRP-F300 or the Kenwood Kac-8405 to power the speakers

Sony receiver is just poor on mids, maybe I need a new receiver, perhaps one with slightly more power like Kenwood Excelon KDC-x596 or JVC KDX80BT

Some fuck-up in installation? I started the installation myself, got stuck and had a professional finish it. I am a complete noob so seems likely there may be something I don't know about that I did wrong.

Thanks for your help!
