I have a 5 McIntosh amps in the car. MC4000M, MC440M, (2) MC443M, MCC80, MEN 456 crossover box, and Nakamichi TP-1200 preamp in the trunk.
I was wondering if doing a floor install is more durable.. I worry about loading a lot of heavy gear on top of the floor install and weight causing issues. Also if liquid were to spill or if a trunk seal were to fail I would worry about moisture causing damage.
In the wall install.... I am concerned about the amps mounted in the quarter panels coming loose if I hit a bump on a turn. Also I would have an amp on a drawer at the top of the trunk and I worry about heat issues being close to the top of the trunk. This amp would not be a bass amp though. Also by putting the 2 MC443's in the rear quarter panels- they actually fit in a spot that loses zero space compared to the original trunk layout without amps. So I would have wrap around amps everywhere except the lift-gate area of the trunk.
The floor install makes it harder to get to the amps as I have to empty the trunk every time I want to adjust something....(and the spare tire is there too) but to each side of the floor amps I have vents on the lower rear quarter panels that lead to the outside of the car which I could use as air intake on one side and air exhaust on another. IF I go with a wall install I could still pump air out but if the trunk was full there might not be good enough circulation. I can ditch the amp drawer with a floor install. and with a floor install the MC4000M still has to go on the rear wall.... just no room for it otherwise.
I am concerned about the weight added if I were to use a huge sheet of MDF for the floor install + the weight of a plexi sheet on top of that I figure it would have to be 1/2 inch. And scratching is a concern too. I don't think I should risk using tempered glass .
I would like to go to car shows- where you put a picnic in the trunk and a wall install seems to favor that.
Why the hell would you want to do that?? Well if you want to check out other cars- I can just close the trunk and not have to leave food out exposed to bugs and stuff.
The amps are designed to be used for DJ use as well- so having most of them come out as a single floor plate makes them useful a a table for when I DJ.
However I could still put in a floor plate for those times when I DJ and just unclip the amps from the walls and drop them into the floor plate/Table.
So what would you DIYMA'ers pick? Floor or wall and why?
