What to look for in a midbass driver

$
0
0
I'm looking for a 6.5" midbass driver to play from about 70 hz to about 250 with my midrange drivers taking over from there. However i keep seeing drivers listed as mid bass with listed frequency responses form 120 up etc and no frequency response curves to look at.

Maybe i'm just looking at the wrong brands. Can anyone suggest anything in the price range of $100 per pair at about 100W rms that should work.

Also what exactly do i need to look at when choosing midbass drivers.

My plan is to install these under my front seats angled upward toward the dash as i don't have any other location. My midranges are mounted in the doors. This is purely experimental, I'm not even sure i would like how it sounds.

AB VFL4480.1D or Sundown SAZ-1200D

Ok guys here's my dilemma. I'm almost done putting my first build together. I just ordered two sundown SA-8V.2's. All I need now is an amp to power them. I can go with a used(less than 1 yr) Sundown SAZ-1200D for $275 or a new American bass VFL4800.1D for $350. I'm wanting more SQ than SPL here but am just not sure which will work better in this case. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with either amp? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
This is what I've done so far;

I did not take this video, nor was I there. I don't know the specifics of the box or any other info other than what is posted in the video. What I know is that those woofers are rated for 800watts RMS and I had heard rumors of them taking a GZPA 1.4000 but this is the first I've seen of it.

We have several retailers that have been testing these woofers and have heard nothing but good from them. Brandon @ Audio Anarchy has one and will be doing a video and review of the sub and our Titanium 1.800.

ZAPCO Z50c2 (modded)

hey guys i have a zapco z50c2 that has been modded out that id like to sale.
its in good shape physically. i havent used it in any of my cars and kindof got a deal on it when i bought a studio 500 from another member. id just assume keep it, but i may never get around to using it. i may do some trading if somebody wants to let me know what they have. i like old amps, but would entertain any offer. also needing midbass or subs.
ive changed out all caps. the 2.2uf input caps are replaced with Wima mks3's and bypassed with EMZ polystyrenes.other signal caps are elnas and extensive use of polystyrene and russian SMG silver micas. the SMG's are old soviet military caps that are very high quality compaired to the dog bone caps that they sale at mouser. no harsh treble with these. all ceramics were replaced with c0g type ceramics or polypropeline.
the tl074 quad opamp has been replaced with 2 BB opa2604's on a brown dog adapter. an SMG silver mica is placed across the v+/v- pins to help clean any oscillation caused by the faster opamps.supply caps are panasonic FM's, and FR's.

amp is in pretty good shape. any scratches are pretty hard to see unless you get real picky. i never had this mounted in my cars but have listened to it extensively on my workbench. id say over all its a strong 8. all caps are brand new.

as far as price, i realize this is a 50 watt amp, so i feel funny asking too much, but i have put some time and money into it. so please dont come back at me with accusations of price gouging haha. but im flexible too. shoot me an offer and well see what we can work out.

new member, hello there

Looking for a bit more midrange impact, upgrade mids? rear door subs?.......

$

0
I know this is a pretty worn out question and topic, but everyone's build and situation is unique, and I could use the help of the pro's.

Right now I'm running active 2way+sub in my 2010 Kia Soul, here's my equipment, pics are in my build page.

80PRS in network mode
ScanSpeak D3004-6020-00 tweets in the factory location.
JL C5-650cw in front with deadening on alot of the door, duct seal on ithe baffles
JL stealthbox with 12w0v3-4
JL XD 600/6. 75w each to tweets and mids+ 200w to
JL XD200/2 (not hooked up) that I can use for sub or tweets

I'm looking to get more midrange impact from my mids and be able to effectively cross them lower (@ 80hz right now with a 12 or 18db slope) and add some bass, pop, snap etc. while still being able to blend them well with the tweets. I realize that I might be sacrificing sq for this, but maybe with the right setup I may actually do better. I have a couple ideas and wonder what you guys think may work best. I really like my C5's, but I worry about crossing them too low, and I lack experience with most of the better brands to know the best route to take. So should I:

1. Add more power to the C5's? I can add a xd200/2 for sub duty, then bridge 4 channels on my 600/6 and put 200w per channel on the C5's, although I don't think this would actually help with what I'm looking to do, I figured I'd ask.

2. Change out my mids? Something like Morel, Exodus, or another brand, but I don't really want to go over 150 a piece for them.

3. Change the size of my mids. I'm pretty sure I can fit a 7 or 8" in the doors without having to do a ton of work to fit.

4. Add some 6.5 or 8' subs or regular mids to the rear doors. I know most of these ideas will mess with time alignment as well as having trouble with door rattles etc.

5. Add a 6.5" or 8" sub in a console I'll build that will go on the rear floor, it would also double as cup holder, and maybe tablet holder for the rear seats

Do you think it would be worth the extra money and work to do any of this?

Am I underestimating the C5's? I know they are very good drivers, I just worry about crossing them to low and damaging them, because I do like to crank it when I'm in the mood.

Thanks for any help

Active 3 way help

I change my mind about doing a 2 way front stage and now I want to do a full blown 3 way. I basically need some help with driver selection. Before I get into that Ill share my goals and the problems I have to deal with. First off it's going in an 02 wrx sedan. I will be deadening the whole car and putting up an mlv barrier to cut down on noise as much as possible. I will figure out the sub stage later. Amplification is not a problem, nor is processing. I will figure that out once I have a complete plan for my drivers. I want a system that is very dynamic. I dont blast the stereo all of the time, but I do like to crank it sometimes, so I need drivers that can keep up

I will be doing some modifications as needed to fit the drivers. Driver placement will be as followed:

Midbass in the doors
Midrange in the kicks
Tweeters in the a-pillars

The bulk of the frequency range I want to come from the midrange which is going to be the toughest to get right. I want the mids to play from as low as 300hz to 8khz. The a-pillar tweets will be 8kz and up. I should be able to get a good soundstage and height with that setup. Tweeter selection I can figure out for that but am open to suggestions. Off axis firing straight across the dash.

Midbass is going to be tough too. Doors are extremely shallow. If i build spacer I can fit something about 2.75" deep. Thats about it. I need good mid bass. I wont be able to do an 8" in there but 6.5 or 7 i can make work.

Midrange is the biggest delima. For the install Im not going to sacrifice much room down there. I could probably get a 4" in there IB or aperiodic. I could do sealed as well but prefer not to. I probably wont do it at much of an angle. I will play with it but it will probably be completely off axis for space saving purposes. I want it to be pretty stealth. Again I need a dynamic driver that can play loud without distortion and can cover the bulk of the frequency range. I can play around with the crossover all day long so I might be able to do midbass up to 500hz or so, but only if I have too. It needs to cover up to 8k though.

Open to thoughts and suggestions. I prefer not to spend a ton on equipment. Under $700 for all the speakers would be great.

Holden Jackaroo - Door Builds and Subwoofer Box

$

0
Hi guys,
I've been wanting to share a build on here for ages, but I keep stalling on my personal one, so here's another build I've finished recently.

It's in a Holden Jackaroo, built by Isuzu and known in the 'States as a Chevy Trooper, Acura SLX or Isuzu Bighorn. This one has the 3.1 turbo diesel and 365,000km and was in very good nick. It would seem that previous owners must have taken it for a few laps of Australia on holidays or something.

The installation was relatively simple in it's desired outcome; dynamics above all else, and some ability to enter SQ and SPL competitions as they see fit. It's implementation however called for some interesting building, which I really enjoyed.

Equipment included:
- Alpine iDE 187BT media unit
- Alpine MRV-F409 four channel amplifier for midbasses
- Alpine MRV-T320 two channel amplifier for tweeters
- Shok I Mono amplifier for subwoofer
- CSE rca leads
- Shok Industries Classic wiring, 0, 4, 12 and 16 gauge.
- Shok Mats sound deadening.

- SB Acoustics SB17 6" midbass x6 (4 ohm, similar to Arc Black)
- Vifa XT25 mini ring radiator tweeters x2
- Shok Industries Elite 12" subwoofer.

The first job was to run wiring. Jackaroos are pretty good to work on for their age and the type of vehicle. The only thing I found is the sill panel screws stripped easily, and the kick panels clip in really vaguely. Oh, and there'd been oil spilled on the floor in the back, which was a nice surprise when I went to pull wires through :S

The battery also needed some upgrades - flimsy OEM terminals just won't do. That said; I think this battery is going to take a pounding in future.

The firewall grommet is massive, and easy to get to!

That led me to the headunit fitment. Isn't it refreshing to (more or less) slot a DIN cage into a hole and you're done!? Wiring was soldered at the factory loom - only requiring power, acc, antenna trigger and illumination.

This is why I like short rca plugs :)

All done, with USB lead run to glove box.

The subwoofer box. It looks huge for a single twelve, but it's sectioned off inside for 2.7 cubes before driver & port displacement. The owner wanted full width + window line, which bodes well in other ways...

Here's what I mean; lots of space needed!

That's all for now, but the front stage is where things really get interesting. So stay tuned.

Butyl based flashing tape work as sound deadener?

Anyone have experience with a center console enclosue in a regular cab?

$

I have a regular cab Silverado. I have a singe 10" IDQ behind the passenger's seat. While sitting in the passenger seat the stereo sounds awful, the bass is too boomy and sloppy sounding. From the drivers side it sounds a lot better. I think the problem is there is a large plastic panel on the back of the seat which resonates. I am thinking of having a center console enclosure built. Does anyone have any experience with this type of enclosure in a single cab? Does it sound good? Would it be better front or rear firing? I mainly want SQ.

I have a lot of amps to move after the tests are now complete and am interested in acquiring a pair of Leviathan III's and a Minotaur. (For no reason other than I like the construction and aesthetics as well as the power configuration). Should be in great condition with no functional issues.

Here is a list of amps I have available for trade if interested, or we can discuss price for buying outright. The Xtant's could make a nice swap out to a lower priced but excellent performing option, and the JL's are close in price with a smaller footprint.

Hi all. Have a leased 2013 Hyundai Veloster with the audio upgrade and I would like considerably more bass. I want keep everything looking stock, and I'm not real good at this stuff, would like to get it installed by a shop.

My amp is a Cadence FXA4100 150rms 4 channel amp. I want to use this with my sub, JL Audio CS110RG-W3v3

What I should be charged for this install?

Can IB be Ported?

I'm looking to try an IB configuration in the car for fun. What I'm wondering if the trunk is approximately 15 cubic feet and I put a port in the baffle have I built a large ported box or is it just a poorly constructed IB setup?
