Time alignment help

$
0
0
Hey guys, sorry in advance if I'm posting in the wrong sub forum but looking for a little confirmation with what I'm listening for when tweaking the time alignment settings. I've never heard an aligned system myself so just been playing with the settings to find what sounds best and still need more tweaking but looking to see if I'm even on the right track.

So far with the balance and fader set to centre and playing with time alignment alone I've managed to have the staging sound fairly balanced and centred rather than the driver side overpowering the passenger side, is this close to the desired result people look to achieve when setting it up?
I've read a tutorial or 2 but had trouble putting them to practice to just set by ear listening to music.

It's being set from a clarion cz702 and delays appear to be applied in cm rather than ms and contrary to what I originally thought the values entered seem to delay the chosen Speaker by the selected distance rather than entering how far each Speaker is from the driver.

Any feedback would be great on the topic since I've kind of got no clue what I'm listening for and seem to now be under the assumption that left/right balance without fading them is good?

Hi folks,

I have a Passat Variant, and I want to add a subwoofer to it stock audio system.
I am thinking about a versatile 10" sub to get low frequencies but also to be fast enough to listen to classic rock and jazz. I listen 70% of the time rock and metal, but I also listen to old school hip-hop and some jazz.

When it comes to sub I thought about a Rockford Fosgate P3D410. I would love to get a JL, but with a baby on the way, diapers is the only thing I can think about.

The ampliflier is the big question mark for me. I want either a 4 or 5 channel, so I can use with the front oem speakers (2 way), and maybe in future replace them with a 3 way system.

this are my options:

MBQUART DA1-1000.4

PRECISION Power BA1600.4

PRECISION Power BA2200.5

I know they are budget amps, but is not like I am and audiophile, the question is can I get some level of quality and power from them?

Do you guys suggest anything else for this kind of money?

Thanks for reading and the tips!

Product Brand & Model:

ZED leviathan x 2

Custom ram crew/quad cab sub enclosure with 3 x SI BM MKIVs

Condition of all items:

Amps are conservatively an 8/10 cosmetically. 10/10 mechanically.Minor signs of use. These were purchased from captainobvious, and still have his LED mod on both so there is a small hole drilled in the side plate. I'm pretty sure he had one of them sent back to ZED for an issue with one of the RCA inputs. It was fixed and has given me ZERO issues since.

Sub enclosure... I've had a few inquiries about the enclosure itself, and due to depth and airspace it's worthless unless ur running these exact subs. So here it is. It fits under the rear seat of 09-15 ram crew and quad cabs with 1.5" spacers under the seat mounts. .5 cu ft per sub. It's 3 pieces, 2 enclosures and a top Beaty panel that is covered in suede with LEDs.

Subs - one is about 8 months old, 2 are about 5 months old. They were ran at 8ohms with about 380 watts each. Not abused, everyone knows about these subs already. I will not sell these without the enclosure

My Build log for it. I have a log here as well but this one goes into more detail..

I'm trying to cobble together a system that will sound decent in my 1994 Mercedes E-class sedan.

For speakers I'm thinking about going with the Jehnert setup since it comes with matching dash speakers (midrange/tweeter) to go along with the midbass doorboards. From what I have heard, the Jehnerts provide an acceptable amount of bottom end by adding bass frequencies thanks to the dual 6.5" drivers in each front door. They cannot produce much in the bottom-octave (20-40Hz) but they are a huuuuge improvement over nothing in the doors at all, and still better than the single driver that came with the stock system. Jehnert supplies MB Quart drivers for the 6.5" midbass and 4" dash midrange, and a 1” soft-dome tweet supplied by Rainbow. The Jehnerts need quite a bit of Power for the door drivers, and it's all routed through a three-way passive crossover.

So: Jehnert Speaker set-up powered by the Xtant 3300c amp that is already installed in the trunk and use existing rear-deck speakers for back fill.

Questions: (1) what HU?...will probably be feeding music from my iPod and Iphone, (2) do I really need a subwoofer?, (3) can the Xtant handle this?, (4) what is missing here...will this work?

TIA

Additional info:

Used these for a while in my Lancer, won a few SQ competitions. They are smaller diameter and shallower than pretty much any other 8" midbass so they will fit where most others won't which is awesome. They'll play high enough to be used in a 2-way with the right tweeter, especially if more on axis than doors. I used them in a 3-way playing 70-270Hz and they did everything I ever asked of them without issue.

And they WILL be ran passively, unfortunately. So far, we're leaning towards either some Focal Access A1 or maybe some Pro50 nos Boston's from Ebay.

What sets are we missing considering, in the price range, which we should also consider ?

On me

I just found out one of my Alpine SPX-137a 5-1/4" is bad. The tweeters are still good. What is out there for a cheap replacement set of drivers? This is going to be a quick stop gap until I install my ID XS-65 components this winter. Just looking for tunes right now. Any suggestions if you have some to sell or can shoot me a link that would be great!

Thanks a bunch guys.

Any box size insight for a 10" DVC Infinity 10" D VQ

$

Box will be a little over .75cuft, which is a bit over minimal for the Infinity spec of a DVC 10"VQ sub.

This sub is over 12 years old, but its not used, just tested before.
I think Infinity recommended optimally 1cuft.

Do people do anything to sealed resin boxes to help with sound? I have seen foam material used in it, sometimes for sound shape or lower the volume size etc...

Anyone have experiences with this sub and any sweet spot recommendations? (size, Hz, etc)

Small Budget System for Summer Ride

$
0
0
Living in Canada, I have a summer Car and a winter car. My summer Car is an early 80's Chrylser two door, and am looking to replace the stereo, as the stock drivers (and replacements) are toast.

As its an older car, it doesn't offer CD etc. My desire is to use a newer head unit, stowed either in a glove box or under a seat, so it appears the stock radio is still being used.

So far these are the components I have selected to make up my system:

Head Unit - Alpine CDA-9887 - Has a 3 way active crossover which I plan to use. Can be found for $50 used locally.

Amplifier - Precision Power BA2200.5 - 5 Channel Amplifier for highs, mids and subs - $149 new

2 Wideband Drivers in dash - Tymphany TC9FD18-08 - 3.5" Full range driver - $13ea

2 Midbass in kickpanels - GRS 6PR-8 - 6.5" Woofer - $11ea

2 Subs in rear deck infinite baffle - GRS 10SW-4 - 10" Subwoofer $19ea

I have never made kickpanels, but am familiar with the construction process. As for what makes an ideal driver, I have read various things and am a bit confused. I chose the mid simply because I saw that they were a low VAS and went reasonably low.

As for Infinite Baffle subs, I've never tried, but have built open baffle speakers where a QTS of about 1 was ideal. Now I hear this is a bit different, and that Infinite Baffle in a car is not the same. The 10" subs I chose have 6.5mm of Xmax and a QTS of .63. It's a reasonably large trunk if that matters. I chose a smaller driver because I thought it may sound better, but know its not always the case. Now I am torn on whether I go with 2 10" drivers or a single 15" driver. My rear deck can accommodate either.

I had originally planned to run the wideband and mids off the headunit, but think I may need a bit more Power and since I need a sub amp, the PPI Black Ice 5 channel fits the bill and isn't hard on funds. As I've read, too many watts for IB subs can be bad, so I don't need a kilowatt or anything excessive.

Naturally I left out wiring. My biggest head scratcher will be how to install the aftermarket head unit out of the way. I assume I can tie into something to allow me to remotely turn it on or something. I wish I could just use my Ipad via bluetooth or something to control the head unit, but alas, we are not quite there yet in terms of being able to do what I want to do (or are we?).

The budget is laughably low, and likely to not go as smoothly as planned. I am content in trying this because I like active crossovers (i use them at home), cheap drivers don't turn me off, and my car doesn't need a stereo that's more expensive than the car itself. Hopefully I am off to a decent start, and some of you folks could provide a bit more insight, suggestions or tips. Thanks in advance.

Do ANY of the Focal subs play LOUD sound quality ?

Forgive me for the capitals. I've heard some amazingly smooth and nice sounding Focal subs ... but never that really could get loud and kick you in the chest with lots of authority. Has that changed much, under the Utopia and multi magnet, hyper expensive models that is ?

Does it matter if the R & L front speaker wires are reversed on the amp output?

The front right wires are plugged into the left out and vice versa. All wires are correctly connected to the the + and - correctly so they are not out of polarity.

Problem solved Alpine KCA-420i alternative

Ok I figured I would post this for the people who don't like the interface of the alpine kca-420i. Many of the older alpines (iva-d300 cough cough) have a poor interface and won't allow you to shuffle/browse your music. Its a real PITA because they can only read so many folders. This cable I bought should allow you to connect your ipod to just about any alpine radio with an ai-net input. Or if you have an ipad and don't want it to interface with your alpine unit and still have good sound quality. I bought a dock for mine because it came with a remote to change the track and the volume. Normally when you plug in the ai-net to ipod plug the volume is controlled on the unit and cannot be changed through the ipod.

Here is the cable bought on eBay.

Amazon.com : Apple Universal Dock for iPod (White) - MB125G/B : MP3 Players & Accessories

The old school dock I used for the remote.

This will not allow you to view tracks through your alpine unit. This did not really bother me as much as not having a good interface or being able to shuffle my playlists. Here are a few pics of the cable and the dock. It works perfect for what I needed it for and charges the ipod.:)

ZAPCO ST-1 in Protect Mode when Hot Outside

$
0
0
I'm hoping someone can help me diagnose this problem so I don't have to send amp off for repair. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have an ST-1 driving an 8" JL sub and two ST-4X's driving the main speakers in my truck.

The ST-1 and the ST-4X's are all powered from a single distribution block (0-gauge/block/4-gauge) and grounded separately(4-gauge). All three get REM 12v Power from an Audison BitOne.

I installed all of them in a new truck in February, when temperatures were moderate here in Louisiana. The amps worked fine until June, when temps started climbing above 80F.

The STX-4's continue to work fine. The ST-1, however, goes into protect mode if the temperature inside the truck is 85F or above WHEN I START IT. In the morning, when ambient temperature is ~75F, the amp starts up fine and continues to work as long as the truck is on. Even if I listen to something heavy on bass (i.e., when you would expect the amp to heat up some), it works fine--as long as it was cool when it started up. Any time the temp inside the truck is 85F or above when I start it, the amp goes into protect mode immediately.

If the truck was hot when I started it (and amp went into protect), if I drive around long enough for the A/C to cool down the cabin, the amp will work if I turn the truck off then on again. Again--seems like as long as the cabin temp is below 85F at startup, the amp works fine.

I have not noticed any exceptions to these rules, except one: Regardless of how hot the cabin temp is at startup, if I only turn the key part of the way ("ACC"), but don't start the engine, the amp will work. But if I start the engine, it will go into protect. My truck is a 2015 Tundra, and when you turn the key from ACC to ON, it resets all electronics. When I realized this, I tested the REM Power with a voltmeter. In ACC mode, the REM power is ~12V. With engine running, REM power is ~13.4. [These voltages are from memory. I will re-check them tonight and correct them if wrong.] Remember, the REM lead from the BitOne is daisy-chained--all three amps see the same voltage.

One other thing worth mentioning... The REM leads from the Audison BitOne are delayed about 6 seconds (i.e., when key is turned, BitOne powers up, waits a few seconds, then turns on REM leads to amps).

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Thanks very much.
