How do you guys feel about this lower cost DSP from Pioneer?

I'm not looking to buy one anytime soon or Anything, just happened to see it on Crutchfield's site a few days ago.

It doesn't seem like it'll excel in any area as a DSP, but at the same time, there's not a lot of sub $200 DSPs on the market yet, so in that regard, it has a leg up I guess.

Just thought I'd see how everyone else feels about it.

thoughts on speaker upgrades

$

0
I'm new to this forum, but have been a DIY car audio guy for 30+ years. My current project is a 2016 Dodge Challenger Hellcat with the HK stereo. Last fall I decided to upgrade the speakers/amp/sub/signal processing with the following:

Focal Utopia Be 165W-RC front stage
(2) JL 12W3-V3 subs in a sealed enclosure firing to the rear of the trunk
JL RD400-4 for the front stage
JL RD500-1 for the subs
RF/Maestro DSR-1 for the signal processing

Here's where I am at with this project. After spending countless hours with the Focal crossovers, I finely decided to eliminate them and use the DSR-1 to bi-amp the front stage. The end results were much better that the active crossovers, but I am still less than impressed with the sound quality of the Focals. They just don't have the clarity and crispness that I have found with the Focal separates that I have used before. So, I am at a dilemma here. Do I bite the bullet and replace the Focal speakers with something else? Morel? Hertz? At this point I am not 100% certain that the speakers are at fault. My assumption is that the DSR-1 isn't coloring the signals going to the amps. Also, I have never used the RD series of JL amps, using the HD series previously.

I have paid special attention to speaker phasing, and time alignment, as well as crossover points.

So, I guess I am looking for thoughtful responses as to what my next move should be.

Kenwood subwoofer level output setting

$

Hello all - I searched the forum and got conflicting answers, so here we are.

My Kenwood KMM-BT515HD headunit has a "subwoofer output level" setting that ranges from -50 to +10 with default at 0.

Is this a "bass boost" type of feature, or does adjusting this to max +10 give me the maximum output voltage from the headunit?

Seems like an important thing to know when setting amplifier gains. I've always been under the impression you want the head unit to put out its best signal so the amp can be set at the lowest gain possible to eliminate noise.

It's been about 20 years since I build a decent car audio system :)

Thanks for your time

2.5" - 3.5" speaker for Dash opening options audiofrog / morel, / infinity / hertz

$

Hello All,

I am looking for a driver that is similar to the Audiofrog GB25. I have looked into that driver as well as the following products:

Infinity Kappa Perfect 300m 3.5
Morel CCWR254 2.5
Hertz MP 70.3 3

GB 25 is what I would love but if I can get something to work for less that sounds close I will do that.

I am building a 3 way setup for my 2018 Camry. Doors will most likely get the Audiofrog GS60 unless I decide to save up for some Scan Revelators (or if I can get audiofrog GS690 to fit) I was planning on using the stock JBL silk dome tweeter crossed high, probably between 5-10k. I may replace them eventually but I figure the frequency range they are covering they will probably be fine but correct me if I am wrong.

Amp is a Kenwood 901-5: 4 x 60@4 ohms and 4 x 75@2ohms
Processing will be Rockford Maestro unit

Anyone have any experiences / thoughts on these drivers listed above or have any suggestions of other drivers I should maybe considered. I do not want to cut the dash and I want to keep the car stock looking as it is my wifes daily driver.

How many channesl do i need?

$

Easy question. I'm trying to figure out how many channels I need for the purpose of amp selection. I currently have passive 3-ways up front and a set of rear speakers and a sub. The finished project will have active 3-way up front and rear speakers with 2 subs. I am going to run the VXi series amp from JL and my 2 options are the 1000/5 or the 800/8. Sure I can also run bi amp with the 600/6 AND the 600/1. I need at least 300W (can be bridged) for the subs, everything else can be 75W. More than 75W to the speakers is overkill in my situation. This is an SQ build for my Vette. I'm open to thoughts or suggestions, especially when thousands more are going to be spent. Love this forum.

Factory integration - too much D/A-A/D conversion?

$
0

With factory integration components like JL's Fix and Twk, how much does all the digital-to-analog and vice versa conversion affect sound quality?

I count 5 back-and-forth conversions:

1. Digital audio file (wav/mp3/flax/etc) converted to analog by factory HU/amp/etc.

2. Analog signal converted to digital within Fix86 for processing.

3. Digital signal converted back to analog again within Fix86 for RCA output.

4. Analog signal converted to digital for processing within Twk88.

5. Digital signal converted to analog for RCA output to amp.

I'm assuming each conversion strips integrity, and 5 cycles of that? Yikes? Or not so much?

I make the above assumption because converting the same audio file back and forth from mp3 to wav affects the quality. Same thing with editing digital photos. (These might not be apples-to-apples, I'm not sure.)

I get that it's either the above string of conversions, or suffer the OEM system. For most modern applications there's not really a third option.

So my question is, are the integration products successful because all the back-and-forth conversions don't really matter? Or do folks buy them because a noticeably compromised sound is still better than OEM?

2013 Camry XLE - On a Budget

$

Hey all.
I finally made an account after lurking for a bit, and I'm about to start the build on my camry. I saved up ~650 total, and only spent 480 on the core bits and pieced with the recent ebay 15%. I also didn't want to replace the HU since the iDL stuff is stupidly expensive for my broke self.

Equipment:
-AudioControl LC7i
-Infinity REF-6530CX(fronts)
-Infinity REF-9632ix(rears)
-KnuKonceptz Kolossus Fleks 4 channel
-Another 50 feet of speaker wire(12 gauge)
-Precision Power iON i520.4 Amp
-Related speaker harnesses for the HU
-Related speaker adapters

Hopefully I'll have photos of the planning bits today. I do want a sub and sound deadening. Originally was going to get stuff from Sound Deadener Showdown but with only ~150 left for now, I've held off, and I sent an email over ~New Years asking for some guidance.

Going all out this time

$

I'm going all out this time (for me) and going to get some really nice speaker drivers for my CX5. I considered spending the money for an AudioFrog GB12 subwoofer and GB15 tweeters but have decided to go scanspeak 30W for the sub and AudioFrog GS series for the mid woofer. I do need some experienced advice in choosing a tweeters though. I have narrowed it down to the following tweeters:

ScanSpeak Illuminator R3004/6020-00 1" Tweeter Small Ring Radiator
VS
ScanSpeak Illuminator D2004/6020-00 Tweeter
VS
ScanSpeak Illuminator D3004/6020-00 Tweeter Textile Dome

I’m leaning towards the Scanspeak D3004 because of its proven low distortion and ability to cross low in autosound and what looks like the best off axis response, but I’m intrigued by the ring dome version too. I’m going to run one of these tweeters with the AudioFrog GS60 mid woofers because I cannot find a better autosound mid woofer for the money that has low distortion and can meet a tweeter in a 2way active system crossed no higher than 2500 Hz L-R. I would love to run the GB60 but $800 is a bit too much $$$, same goes for the GB12 too and in bassbox Pro the Scanspeak models better sealed with a lower F3 point of 39.27 vs 43.5 Hz. I might be able to fit the GS690 in the lower portion of my CX5 but will have to remove the door card and measure to see.

Initially these tweeters will be put in the factory dash corner locations of my CX5 but I think I may try some fiberglass and locate them in the sail panels pointed on or very near on axis. If these Scanspeak tweeters work out and I really like them than I will purchase another pair for my truck and run those with some Image Dynamics XS57 midwoofers I scored on eBay cheap and hope they live up to their claim and rave reviews. That truck has a Sundown SD3 in ported configuration and unless the Scanspeak driver is significantly better than the SD3, it will be staying put as I currently really like how it sounds.

I have a JL Twk 88 DSP and Pioneer PRS D4200f 4 channel for active duty and have no problem tuning and using Rew to get the response I want. For bass duty I have an Infinity K1000 or a Zapco ST 850 XMll, which might be a better fit power wise for the Scanspeak 30W subwoofer. I will be running the subwoofer in approximately a 1.2 cube sealed box modeled in BassBox Pro. I also modeled the GS series midbass woofers against various Scanspeak midbass woofers and the GS series have the best FR curve with the better midbass repose too.

My goal is pure sound quality, which I know is very subjective but I also know that using high quality low distortion drivers is a major key component to achieving this so I’m willing to take the plunge and go for the good stuff.

Installers: 2018 camry stock door speaker size?

What are the stock sizes for the 2018 Toyota Camry door speakers? I have seen some places they are 6x9 and others that they are 6.5. Anyone know for sure?

hos important is it to sound treat a trunk?

$

Hey fellas,
I'm doing an install on my 2016 accord and am wanting to know the importance/benefits of sound treating a trunk before installing subs. The rear speakers have all been removed, leaving the holes unobstructed for sound to flow through. I don't know which direction the subs will be facing (a db meter will make that decision for me). If there's any other information yall need let me know. Thanks as always.
