Amp/dsp combo with or without HU?

$

Hi, currently running a passive 2 way system and sub with no external processing. Sony RSX-GS9 analog to amps. Utilizing the fairly archaic crossovers built into the headunit.

I've been thinking, what is even the point of keeping the Sony if I were to run a Helix DSP or amp/DSP combo (i.e. P SIX) with the director and use the USB HEC or BT module? This should give me quite a bit more tuning ability. I currently really only use BT through the Sony. Don't listen to any hi-res music routinely. If I were to keep the Sony and use an optical connection I'd lose my volume knob. Any input here? Thanks!

Can a good soundstage be achieved with faily low position of tweeter in door?

Currently re-doing my door treatment (products ordered from Resonix). Fairly ubiquitous 99-06 truck/SUV door panel has a large amount of room to mount a tweeter to the panel. I currently have TN53k's in the A pillars. While working on the panel it came across my mind if I could mount some large format tweeters to the panel such as E110s. With proper tuning could this produce a nice appropriate level soundstage or would I be better or just keeping a small format tweeter in the A pillar? Thanks!

Advice on refurbished vs. Bnib

Purchased a Mosconi One 240.2 and a Mosconi One 1000.1D from Woofersetc (the 1000.1D is factory refurbished). The photos on their site showed them all having the same design as the 70.6 I had already purchased from a local dealer. I am very recently introduced to the Mosconi brand and was just trying to get matching amps to the 70.6 I already had.

When they arrived, the 240.2 had miraculously been upgraded for free to a 250.2, which did have the same design (read... sticker) as the 70.6 but the refurbished 1000.1D had the older design style. This seemed vaguely bait and switchy and just vaguely odd but I'm definitely not up in arms over it.

Just wondering what you guys think. I asked them if they could suggest any solutions, and they offered to accept a return and full credit towards a BNIB 1000.1D or I can keep the refurbished 1000.1D and they will sell me a BNIB 1000.1D for 300$ off. That seems reasonably generous but again a bit odd. I'm not really sure what to do.

Currently running a jl hd that does the same power at 4 ohm.

I'm really looking to take it to the next level.

I know Brax is quality but is a $5000 worth putting on audiofrog drivers?
Dont get me wrong, I like my frogs. I just dont know of they are capable of the kind of detail brax is known for.

I'd like to hear things about the brax vs the jl hd and any other thoughts anyone has.

Looking to build a really nice set of mono amps

Looking for a schematic and parts list to build a very clean sounding set of amps 50 watts to be set in the same case using the same power and ground lugs. This would be used in line with my audison bit one. My friend makes amps but he mostly does tubes. Obviously that’s an issue in a car especially a car that sees the track.

JBL MS-8 setup question balance ...

Hey guys hopefully some of you are still around that know about this thing. I've been running this for a while and I love it and needed to recalibrate the audio tuning part. So I did so and then later realized that the sub system level and balance were not centered. I'm pretty sure this makes no difference during calibration but I'd like to confirm because it's very hard for me to get at the processor to plug in the mic. Thank you in advance.

Stinger amp wire question.

Does anyone know exactly how many individual strings of tinned copper are in Stinger Pro series 8 AWG wire? It's not written on the jacket. The actual core looks pretty thick, but the jacket looks thin and I was also wondering if it could withstand engine compartment radiant heat well... thanks for any help. 👍

Diffraction panel in door.

so im not using my door pods for enclosures anymore and i was thinking of what i could do with the space. I've asked quite a few people about making a 3 sided "enclosure" and just filling it with foam so that any sound hitting the door would be absorbed and almost everyone said its not a great idea, that i should aim for diffraction instead.

So i was thinking. What if i built something like this into the bottom half of the door instead. I could wrap the top with an acoustically dead fabric so you would never see the squares at all.

Thoughts??

Bandpass Always On...

The Mosconi 1000.1D I got for my new system apparently has a low-pass filter that can't be set any higher than 280Hz. It's 24db and is always active along with a non-defeatable subsonic filter that can't be set any lower than 20Hz.

I'm really thinking about ditching the amp because of this but I thought I would ask advice here first. I'm using a JL TW5 13.5inch sub in a sealed box so I definitely don't need the subsonic filter and I'm using a Helix DSP.3 so I definitely don't need the low pass.

Am I right that this amp is not well suited to this build? Can it be worked around? The subsonic filter bothers me the most.

Thanks for your input!

Help me understand pink noise at different levels

Here is measurements I made with periodic pink noise generated from REW on my laptop. I am using the laptop sound card, plugged to the analog input of my DSP. Every measurement is made with a 3db difference. I started at -3db up to -30db.

At low level, everything seems normal, at high level, there is no difference between the measurements. Same observation with different sound level on the laptop.

Can someone explain this to me ?

Cap to protect tweeters in active setup

This is just a little story to convince you to install one.

Yesterday I was tuning left and right speaker as a whole. I linked all the left driver in the helix software to do so. Without thinking, I modified the high pass filter on the midbass. I didn’t realize it would change it for all the drivers. When I saw my midranges dancing I knew what I did! Without a cap, I would have blown the tweeters right away!

Hey y’all. I’ve decided to finally treat myself to a SQ professional install.

Any advice on choosing the Mosconi 8/12 AeroSpace vs the Zapco HDSP-Z16V?

Morel Elate Titanium 903 3-way vs Illusion Audio Carbon 3 way (C3 & C8) ?

Thanks and I’ll give my thoughts too after a few replies.

I was curious if anyone has some incite on how the JL Audio & MTI under seat truck sub enclosures are built? I would like to build my own but am not sure how the curved angle corners are made unless its fiberglass or maybe stacks of layered mdf glued and sanded like a 3D printer would do. The stacked method would waste so much material though.

We just bought our 16yr old this car.
I looking at doing a very mild 2 way system with sub. It has the base radio with 4 speakers.
The front doors has 6.5” speakers (depth about 2.5”) with a 1.5” opening for a tweeter(top of door panel by opening lever).
I want to run an LOC or Dayton dsp off the stock radio if possible and power everything with a 5 channel amp.
My budget is around $400 for equipment,
I have a few misc things for it and I will have to buy a few things. (Deadener, rca’s, etc) not included in above.
I have a set of Hybrid Audio Imagine 6.5”.
The tweeter is too big and I think the midbass may be also.
I also have a DB Drive 12” sub with box to use.
I mainly looking for some ideas for the front stage.
Component sets or raw drivers.
I can always sell the Hybrid’s.
I have the Hybrid Unity’s in my truck and they sound good.
For deadener, I thought about trying some of the Ensolite products.
Thanks for any help.

Installing Helix P Six MK2

My experience with installing amps and setting gains is limited to a JL Audio RD amp, very easy and quick.

I want to install the Helix P Six MK2 properly but I am seeing a lot of confusing (for me) posts on the internet so i will ask directly. Here are the steps i see i should do, please tell me if its wrong.

1.Disconnect car neg battery connection, connect positive negative remote in on the helix. No need to change jumper on helix because headunit has 4v input and that is the default for the helix. Correct?

2.Connect battery on car again. On headunit, set everything flat. I do not have a cd player, so i use file i have ripped on high quality 1 kHz full scale test tone (0 dB), turn volume on HU up to 90%. Is the ripped tone what the standard is for people who dont have cd player? Volume 90%?

3. At this point I have read to connect RCA inputs in one at a time unless i see the clipping light. However, I didn't read where and at what point I should turn up the input sensitivity dials on the outside of the helix (what are the proper names of these dials?)

4. Once the above is done, turn down volume on HU, turn off car, connect speakers on Helix terminals, turn car on, first check polarity on all speakers, connect laptop and start tuning?

5.I read this quote "If the Clipping LED already lights up, you have to reduce the input sensitivity via the respective potentiometer until the LED turns off."
What is the potentiometer? The dials on the outside?

The HU is a Alpine Halo, the speakers are gb10,gb25,gb60. I very much appreciate the help. Last two weekends were spent crafting sails for the tweeters and brackets to fit the 25s in stock location. Pretty excited to have gotten to this point by myself while learning so much.

Yes this is correct... Looking for someone to do some tuning to my system in NC or SC. Need to be fluent in the Helix software. Would need gains set correctly. Use of a oscilloscope would be a plus. Would need it RTA’ed for SQ with the most volume possible without distortion.. System consists of 4-super tweeters. 2-6.5 midrange 2-6.5 midbass 2-8” midrange and 2-10” midbass. Powered by 4 soundigital amplifiers and the Helix pro mk2. Any help or contacts would be great... thank you...

4th order tuning

Hi guys I’ve got a question about tuning a 4th order sub box.
The box is going to be a three chamber box with two hertz hi energy 12 inch subs. The owners manual gives me specs for a sealed box with 23.6 litres air space (each sub) with a frequency of 50 hz. Now the ported part of the box is gonna have twice as much air space (94.4 litres cause there’s two subs) I’ve read that this should be tuned somewhat high ie 50 hz ish, my question is since the sealed portions are already at 50 hz could I lower the tuning of the ported box to something more like 38-40 hz or does it need to be in the 50 hz range?
It will be for hip hop/hard rock
Picture for clarity
Thanks in advance

Many tweeter diaphragms are made with this, but when it comes to the actual acoustics, is it more of a metallic "shrill" type of sound, or a fabric/textile "warm" type of sound? Thanks.
