1988 Supra

$

Intro:

Hello, I am planning a fresh system install for my 1988 Toyota Supra. Since the stock sound system has fully rotted away I am starting from scratch.

I'd like to spend around $500 on the components themselves. (Excluding wiring). I listen to a variety of genres and would prefer a balanced sound.

Plans:

Headunit:
Pioneer MVH-S600BS ($110)

Speakers (Front & Rear, both Coax):
2x Focal Integration ISC 100 ($80)

Amplifier:
Rockford Fosgate R250X4 ($150)

Subwoofer:
Rockwood Fosgate Punch 300-10

I am new to this so forgive me for any lack of understanding on my part. My main concerns are as follows: Will the 4in speakers pack enough of a punch by themselves? Should I forget the rear 4in speakers? Have I made any obvious mistakes?

Any help is appreciated and thank you for your time.

HU advice for single cab pickup 3-way install

$

0
I'm Planning out an install for my old 2003 Silverado single cab work truck. I've been away from the car audio hobby for about 10 - 12 years now, but a friend roped me back in when he had me do an install for him a month ago and now I just have to have something... something wonderful.

I mainly need HU advice as most of the other gear has been acquired already, which is as follows.
Hertz Mille Legend 1650.3 components
Xtant X604 4 ch amp
Fosgate Power T1S-1X12 prefab truckbox
Fosgate Power T1000-1BDCP mono sub amp

I want to do a 3 way active setup, and I'm thinking I would like the HU to have the DSP functionality built in as I don't know where I'd locate an external unit, and I'm already pushing it on the budget. Space is definitely an issue in a regular cab pickup, especially in my case as the whole rear wall will be full with that huge Xtant amp, and the sub. Then I'll need the sub amp to go under the seat and find enough room for tie downs and an ice scraper that I usually don't keep in the toolbox on the bed. Squeezing in the passive Xovers and a possible capacitor would be tough enough on the back wall let alone find room for a dsp too, plus I don't have any experience with external DSPs and have no idea what's out there. That would leave me with one obvious choice, especially if I go single DIN and that's the Pioneer DEH 80PRS. I'm thinking this will do everything I want it to and offer stellar SQ in return. Akin to my old Eclipse 8454 I ran years ago in a 3 way bi amped config I would hope. And up to 36db/oct xovers... and for $350...yes please.
The reason I was thinking single DIN is I'd also like to install an Audio Control Epicenter InDash as I listen to a lot of old stuff that has very little foundation of bass in the recordings, and I've always wanted one.
There are a couple things I don't like about that Pioneer though.
1. It's a Pioneer. They've always seemed cheap to me, but alas SQ is worth it
2. No HD radio. I have several HD stations by me, 2 of which I listen to regularly and would love to have HD radio in a head unit, and HD radio sounds so amazing in comparison.
3. I've heard reports of Bluetooth not being real seamless with current android phones, and this would drive me bonkers if I run into this.

Is there a better solution? Should I consider the alpine CDE 149BT instead or other?
Should I do a double din instead that would be bet, mter and a regular epicenter?
Should I suck it up, find room for a dsp that y'all could recommend and do whatever for a HU? So many options. But the DEH 80PRS seems like the best one if I can get over shoddy Bluetooth and no HD radio. What do you all think I Should do?

Advice needed: Setting gains with a DSP in the system.

$

Just finished an install in my son's truck and looking for guidance on seting it up. Here is the system 1st.
Headunit: Kenwood Double Din
DSP: Dayton DSP-408
Amps: RF 600A4 (Mids/Tweets) & Zed Audio built Lanzar Opti 200.2 (Subs)
Rockford Fosgate PLC-U inline bass knob for sub amp
Tweets: Kicker Resolution silk domes
Mids: Stereo Integrity TM65 MKIII's
Subs: Two 12" Diamond Audio D3's

So I have a DD-1 for setting gains and have used it on systems without dsp's. But what is the normal procedure when you are using a dsp? Headunit, dsp, then amps? DSP input and output?
Anyway, yet to fire it up. Need to power it up and start playing with the dsp. Worried about blowing my tweeters, at least until I get the xovers set. Did not wire in any capacitors to protect them but could if needed. Are they really needed if the dsp is setup properly?
Here is a couple install pics.

2016 Camry Non-JBL Setup

$

I have a 2016 Camry with the stock 6-speaker system. I know the front doors and rear deck are 6x9's. The dash has 3" speakers. I want to abandon using the rears. I have been told that a great front setup does not need the rears. If I can go that route, that is best. I do not want to do much or any modifications to the car. Below are my thoughts...

Option 1: Go with a simple 2-way component system with the 6x9 or 6.5" in the door and the tweeter in the dash locations.

Option 2: Go with a 3-way setup with the 6.5" in the door. For the front, get the Focal mid box to mount the midrange and tweeter. Place those on the dash over the current 3" speaker. Not sure if anyone has tried this, but I know 3-ways get better sound.

I will be adding an amp for the fronts and replace the head unit with the speakers. Down the road, add a sub.

Any thoughts on speakers and brands to go with? I prefer sound quality over loud.

2008 Civic Si sedan SQ setup amp rack

Nothing fancy. Probably might make a trim panel to go over it and make openings for the amps. Wanted something simple, light weight, and out of the way. I stained it just for a different look and ease of application. Panel is 1/2 inch cabinet grade plywood and I popped in rivets into the seat back for back and forth removal/ installation if need be. Old school ARC xxk4150 is heavy as crap compared to today's class D stuff. Mids and highs will be powered by the ARC 85x4 @4 ohm, mids in doors powered by the ACM 4.300 bridged 150x2 @4 ohm, and lastly the 12 inch sub powered by the LC1.800 500x1 @ 4 ohm...One step at a time and getting a little closer to powering everything up. I envy guys with access to an install bay. Damn this Alabama summer heat...

Kenwood Apple Carplay/Android (From 2006) with dash kit + Steering Wheel Interface

Very nice Kenwood double din radio with Apple Carplay/Android Audio including matching Mazda3 trim and steering wheel control interface. This was in my daughters 2006 Touring Hatchback for about a year. Since it's already wired up for a Mazda3 it has the factory matching harness to plug it directly into your car and the plastic trim so it looks like a factory setup. This was purchased from Crutchfield for about $500.

Is this worth it

So a co-worker asked for help with his install in his truck and I told him to join here. I went to his place last week and he seemed to have some pretty high standards.

I first asked about his budget, then what he would want from his system and he said he wants what his son had installed in his car. So I asked to check his son's car out. Factory Mazda HU with a pioneer DEQ 1000 processor, never heard of that. A pair of Boss amps, a Boss sub in an aftermarket enclosure, a two way Alpine type s front stage.

Obviously I wasn't too impressed but it may be what he wanted in terms of cost.......until I heard how much he paid! $3,800.00 for the complete install !!

The install was well done, definitely not a hack job. There were no scratches on any panels. The grounds looked solid and even covered with dielectric grease. The sound was OK and a definite upgrade from OEM. They did give a 5 year no questions asked warranty on components and workmanship.

One of the demo songs that was provided to his son from the shop really freaked me out. His son said "this is what they told me to play when showing off his system. I never heard of "8D" audio tracks, but it sounded terrible? it moved all over and kinda made me sea sick. Son said they told me this is what a DSP can do?

My recommendation was to get a JL Stealth box, plug and play for about $800, an amplified DSP, another $800, keep the factory door spkrs and maybe get a decent set of tweeters. I think that could be done for less than 2K easily if he is willing to do the install himself.

Shaun.....pay attention, you're about to get the best advice on this.

What's up with Woofersetc?

I viewed a recent thread about a fellow member who felt he had been mistreated by a purchase either from Woofersetc directly or by Woofersetc on Ebay. Frankly, the way the OP's post was written it was difficult to figure out exactly what his issue was.

The reason I am posting is that within the post I just mentioned, there were a lot of negative comments about Woofersetc, several of which stated that problems withWoofersetc were WELL KNOWN TO USand thus we should know better.

However, I don't know anything about problems with Woofersetc, and have bought a couple of items with no problems [although I can't remember now if I purchased them directly or through Ebay].

Can any of you guys give me the short version of what the well known problems are with Woofersetc and what to look out for?

Thanking all in advance.

Noobie here! :-)
I would like to learn more about a subwoofer I recently bought. Can anyone explain the meaning of the subwoofer specifications from the Users Manual? The sub is a Boss Audio model # CXX8.
I know what the Impedance is, but what about:

-Xmax
Attached is a screenshot from the manual.
